The Return to the Southern Cross: An Intro The year was 1973. A young guy from Mississippi and his bride of 6 months have moved to Gainesville, Florida for him to begin doctoral work at the University of Florida. His parents, both lifelong educators in MS, had warned him about the downside of a career in education, i.e., meager wages. But, as Richard Pryor had said when his dad had warned him about engaging in a particular type of behavior, "I couldn't wait to [try it]! He'd been wrong about everything else!" However, this lesson was more like the father/son experience that is attibuted to Mark Twain: "When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years."
